Better than antibiotics: scientists have found a way to fight bacteria that complicate the course of COVID-19

Most coronavirus patients die not from the COVID-19 itself, but from complications, including those caused by bacteria that ‘live’ in hospitals and become resistant to a wide range of antibiotics. An alternative to antibiotics – bacteriophages – is discussed by the researchers of the Institute of Experimental Medicine in the report of a Channel Five correspondent.

More and more deaths not from the COVID-19 but from antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Russia

Medicine is faced with the emergence of microorganisms that are resistant to most antibacterial drugs. More and more strains and bacterial pathogens are resistant to antibiotics. The COVID-19 is just one of the possible evils that humanity may face. The director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine, Doctor of Biology, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.V. Dmitriev and his colleagues: Deputy Director for Scientific Work, Doctor of Biology, Corresponding Member of the RAS O.V. The head of the Laboratory of Functional Genomics and Proteomics of Microorganisms at the Institute of Experimental Medicine, Doctor of Medicine A.E. Goncharov discussed the need of creation an alternative to ‘classic’ antibiotics for combating nosocomial infections in an interview with RIA Novosti. According to him, new drugs can be created, in particular, on the basis of bacteriophages (viruses that parasitize bacterial cells and are able to destroy them).
Bacteriophage viruses can be isolated from the ecosystems of the Arctic zone of Russia in order to create drugs on their basis for combating infectious diseases caused by bacteria resistant to existing antibiotics.
