On the 21th of November, 2020, the life of a famous immunologist and a bright personality, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Pyotr Grigorievich Nazarov (07.20.1945 – 11.21.2020) prematurely ended.
The entire scientific career of Pyotr Grigorievich for 50 years was inextricably linked with the Department of Immunology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine. He devoted his life to the development of a priority scientific direction – Immunology of proteins of the acute phase of inflammation, being pupil of Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences V.I. Ioffe and Professor B.N. Sofronov. P.G. Nazarov formulated a concept that anticipated the emergence of the hypothesis of pathogen-associated molecular patterns. P.G. Nazarov headed the laboratory of General Immunology about 30 years old , and he headed the Department of Immunology at the IEM from 2014 to 2019 too. In recent years, fundamentally new results have been obtained under his leadership that affect the key mechanisms of the Immunology of inflammation. The study of pentraxins made it possible to discover and characterize new ligands of C-reactive protein. His studies showed that pentraxins play a protective antitoxic role in the early stages of infection, before the appearance of antibodies, and C-reactive protein is not only a protective, but also atherogenic factor involved in the immunopathological mechanisms of atherosclerosis development. P.G. Nazarov is the author of over 450 publications, including 6 monographs.
He was a member of the editorial boards of a number of scientific journals, was the founder and until the end of his days the permanent editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Cytokines and Inflammation.
Pyotr Grigorievich created an immunological scientific school. 13 Ph.D. and 3 doctoral dissertations were defended under his supervision. For many years, he generously shared his vision of immunology with young people, gave lectures on general Immunology, Immunology of inflammation, nonspecific factors of resistance at St. Petersburg State University and at the First St. Petersburg State Medical University. I.P. Pavlova.
He was an amazingly bright, kind and open person. Pyotr Grigorievich had the rare gift of gathering talented researchers and clinicians around him, disinterestedly sharing with them his non-trivial ideas based on his broad erudition and deep knowledge of his specialty. Scientific adherence to principles was amazingly combined with human kindness and non-conflict in Pyotr Grigorievich, the ability to find a common language with any interlocutor and a willingness to help in any everyday situation.
The bright memory of our Teacher, Professional and Friend will forever remain in the hearts of his students, colleagues and friends.
