Scientists have found an alternative to antibiotics in the Arctic

The head of the Laboratory of Functional Genomics and Proteomics of Microorganisms at the Institute of Experimental Medicine, Doctor of Medicine A.E. Goncharov discussed the need of creation an alternative to ‘classic’ antibiotics for combating nosocomial infections in an interview with RIA Novosti. According to him, new drugs can be created, in particular, on the basis of bacteriophages (viruses that parasitize bacterial cells and are able to destroy them).

Bacteriophage viruses can be isolated from the ecosystems of the Arctic zone of Russia in order to create drugs on their basis for combating infectious diseases caused by bacteria resistant to existing antibiotics.
