The laboratory was established in 2014.
The main goal of the laboratory is to study the mechanisms of interaction of the microbiota of humans and animals with the host organism.
The main areas of research:
– studying of the microbiota of various epitopes of the mammalian organism (intestines, skin, oral cavity, urogenital tract);
– studying of the effect of microbial and non-microbial factors on microbiota;
– development and study of the biological effects of probiotics, autoprobiotics and prebiotics;
– creation of a collection of probiotic microorganisms and samples of microbiota of various origin;
– studying of the characteristics of microbiota, metabolome and microbiome in various diseases;
– Creation of a cryogenic storage and depository of samples of microbiota, probiotic and pathogenic bacteria strains circulating in the Russian Federation.
Methods have been developed for a comprehensive study of bacteria in the in vitro system to assess their probiotic potential: antimicrobial activity, sensitivity to antibiotics, lack of toxicity and virulence factors, ability to produce bacteriocins, as well as survival in the presence of bile, gastric juice, alkali and acids. Improved conditions for the cultivation and storage of various strains of lactic acid bacteria. A collection of probiotic lactic acid bacteria (lactobacilli, enterococci and bifidobacteria), as well as Escherichia isolated from various probiotics, lactic acid products, the digestive tract of humans and animals.
Using biological models, it was shown that probiotics can significantly affect digestion, the morphology of the mucous membranes of the vagina and intestines, suppress pathogenic microorganisms, and affect immunity and behavioral reactions.
The useful properties of the Enterococcus faecium L3 strain used in practical medicine and veterinary medicine as a probiotic are described in detail. These works, as well as the results of comparative studies of other probiotic strains (Enterococcus faecium SF68, E. faecium 72, Lactobacillus fermentum Z, L. rhamnosus K32, L. delbrueckii TS1-06, L. fermentum TS3-06, Bibidobacterium bifidum I, B. longum GT15, Escherichia coli M17, autoprobiotic lactobacilli and enterococci, as well as prebiotics, prove the possibility of targeted therapy for pathology of the gastrointestinal tract, vaginitis and neurodegenerative processes.
